SAGINAW, Mich. (WEYI) — According to the Saginaw County Health Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating the death of a teen after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

The health department says they received a death notification from the Saginaw Medical Examiner's office on June 17. A 13-year-old boy died three days after receiving his second dose of a coronavirus vaccine, the health department said.

The health department says there are steps to be taken to investigate the cause of the death.

This is the process of investigation after the death:

  • The death was reviewed by the local medical examiner’s office.
  • Because he was recently vaccinated, his death was reported by the medical examiner to the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System
  • MDHHS was notified of the death and the completed VAERS information.
  • The investigation as to whether there is a correlation between his death and vaccination is now at the federal level with CDC.
  • Meanwhile, the health department continues to encourage families to speak with their physicians to weigh their own risks and benefits of vaccination.

VAERS is a reporting website, doctors and hospitals report side effects to the website and the CDC then investigates.
