Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders promoted an apparent endorsement by comedian Joe Rogan Thursday, sparking a fierce social media backlash from progressives offended by comments Rogan has made in the past.

Sanders’ official Twitter account posted a recent clip from Rogan’s podcast in which the controversial comedian stated he would likely support the senator in the Democratic primaries.

“I think I'll probably vote for Bernie... He’s been insanely consistent his entire life. He’s basically been saying the same thing, been for the same thing his whole life. And that in and of itself is a very powerful structure to operate from,” Rogan said.

Many on social media, including Sanders supporters and critics, questioned whether the senator should embrace Rogan, given statements he has made mocking the transgender community and feminists and interviews he has conducted with prominent white nationalists. Rogan’s name was a top trending topic on Twitter Friday morning amid debate over Sanders amplifying his comments.

“I really like Bernie and am disappointed to see the campaign boost Rogan, who has made some very anti-trans comments. I really hope the campaign reconsiders,” said activist Alexis Goldstein.

Others argued the fact that Sanders can appeal to someone like Rogan demonstrates electability.

“One premise of his campaign is that he can win some number of alienated men with reactionary social views to the left, and this is proof of concept,” said New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg.

Vox founder Ezra Klein made a similar point, noting that is necessary for a president to work with people who disagree with them to get things done.

“Bernie’s strength is that he can win over some voters who are skeptical of Democrats - like Joe Rogan. If you think getting Trump out of office is actually important, that’s a good thing, and he should lean into it,” he said.

Progressive radio host Zerlina Maxwell rejected that stance, warning Sanders may lose the support of women as the cost of winning support from Rogan.

“I do not believe that sexism, racism, and transphobia are disagreements. I think that’s the disconnect and something you and others might want to marinate on. Respectfully,” she tweeted.

A Sanders campaign spokesperson defended the Rogan endorsement, saying the campaign is building a "multi-racial, multi-generational movement that is large enough to defeat Donald Trump" and that sometimes means working with people who do not share all of Sanders' beliefs.

"By standing together in solidarity, we share the values of love and respect that will move us in the direction of a more humane, more equal world," said press secretary Briahna Joy Gray.
