Rep. Garrett won't seek re-election, citing battle with alcoholism
RICHMOND, Va. (WSET) -- Rep. Tom Garrett announced Monday he is an alcoholic and he will not be seeking re-election.
Just a week ago, Garrett said he would be running for reelection despite his chief-of-staff Jimmy Keady quitting.
Garrett made the announcement in a video shot from Richmond's Capitol Square.
In the tearful video he said, "Any person — Republican, Democrat or independent — who has known me for any period of time and has any integrity knows two things: I am a good man and I’m an alcoholic."
Garrett represents the 5th Congressional District, which includes Campbell, Appomattox, Campbell, and Halifax counties.
He was elected to the position in 2016 after Rep. Robert Hurt retired.
