Ens. Matthew Engel, a native of Lynchburg assigned to USS Boxer (LHD 4), was promoted to the rank of lieutenant junior grade during a ceremony on the US Navy's ship’s flight deck.

According to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, Boxer is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego.
