Officials in South Boston Work Towards Downtown Master Plan

South Boston, VA - Many South Boston residents say they have good ideas for the revitalization of Main Street.

The owner of Sullivan's Antiques thinks the town could take a page out of another area's book when it comes to aesthetics.
"The French Quarter in New Orleans of course, one of the most beautiful places in America. We have basically the same type of buildings, " said Jim Sullivan.

Feedback is what the group Destination Downtown South Boston will be looking for as they complete their Downtown Master Plan.
It all started with the historic John Randolph Hotel. After a feasibility study was completed, officials found it will be necessary to restore more than just the building in order for the hotel and area around it to be successful.

"Developers can come and put a hotel in our downtown, but obviously, we as community leaders need to work on the big picture, " said Destination Downtown South Boston Director Tamyra Vest.

At a public meeting Monday night, a packed house heard from Tamyra Vest and others on plans for filling vacant buildings and possibly creating a more welcoming entrance to the town.
That idea is already getting rave reviews.
"Beautifying our bridge and enhancing the gateway into town is necessary, and I think it's going to be a great thing for town, " said local business owner Andy Newland.
The hotel renovations won't be finished anytime soon, but Vest hopes this master plan will make it possible for the business to thrive once it is complete.
"We're very excited that things are happening in South Boston and will be happening in South Boston, " Vest said.
The town has applied for a community development grant to complete the planning process. So far they've been awarded about $3,000.
