Campbell Co. Sheriff's Office Honors Their Own

Campbell Co., VA - There were big honors for some of Campbell County's finest Friday afternoon at the Sheriff's award ceremony.

Chris Fannon got the Sheriff's Life Saving Award for pulling someone out of a burning car after it crashed right in front of his house.

Sean Hardy and Cheryl Carter were given the Meritorious Service Citizen Awards because the two work at Lynchburg Pawn and were able to help investigators recover stolen property in the murder investigation of John and Virginia Philbrook.

Several deputies were honored for their years of service, including Gerald Lacy who's been with the department for 25 years.

The sheriff's office said goodbye to Lieutenant Melvin Elder who is retiring after 26 years.

Sheriff Steve Hucherson says the part that gets him are the numerous deputies, investigators, even captains who haven't missed a single day of work, some in 25 years.

"You get up with the flu or you get up with the cold in the morning or afternoon, you come out and do this job in all kinds of weather because you want to make a difference," Hutcherson said.
