Woman found not guilty by reason of insanity for stabbing toddler in Warren County (WCSO)

WARREN COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) - A Butler County judge found a woman accused of stabbing a toddler not guilty by reason of insanity.

The verdict for Xiaoyan Zhu was the result of a bench trial on charges of attempted murder and felonious assault Thursday.

Police said Zhu stabbed a three-year-old neighbor in the neck and back with a ceramic knife as he headed to the bus stop with other children on Charlestown Park Drive in March 2021.

Zhu's daughter reported the stabbing to her Mason High School teacher during virtual learning. That teacher then called 911. The child's mother also called for help.

Zhu was initially found incompetent to stand trial.

After treatment at Summit Behavioral Healthcare, she was found competent to stand trial but Judge Donald Oda found her not guilty by reason of insanity.

Zhu has a hearing scheduled on June 28 to determine her treatment.
