Myrtle Beach, Bailey celebrate Carolina League Championship
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - The Hillcats' run for this year's Carolina League Championship came up short Wednesday night as Myrtle Beach won Game Four 5-3 to clinch the series 3 games-to-1.
Special night for Pelicans manager and Madison Heights native Buddy Bailey, winning the title in front of family and friends. Lynchburg took a 3-2 lead into the seventh, but Myrtle Beach scored three times in the inning, one on a wild pitch and another on a bad throw to the plate to take the lead for good. Pelicans closer Ryan McNeil sealed the win with a strikeout as Myrtle Beach wins its second-straight league championship, first under Bailey, the one-time Lynchburg Red Sox skipper in the early 90s.
Buddy Bailey, MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS MANAGER, said "When you've got family, you know my father has passed since I managed here before, he would stay and watch games, I kind of wish he was still here so he could have enjoyed the moment. But it is what it is, and you know every year you've got a different bunch of guys and they scratched and they clawed and we did everything that we could."
Mark Budzinski, LYNCHBURG HILLCATS MANAGER, said "Unbelievable bunch of guys, very proud of them for their work, their hard work every single day and coming out here and competing every night. Couldn't ask for anything more than that."
The Hillcats finish the year 87-and-60 overall, they won the Northern Division first half and tied for the second half title.
