Hillcats hold off Salem 5-4 to win opener of 3-game series

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - The Lynchburg Hillcats held off Salem 5-4 Friday night to win the opener of a three-game series in Lynchburg.

Lynchburg's Shane Bieber had another strong outing, pitching seven complete innings, striking out nine and allowing three runs.

Tie game in the 5th when the Hillcats' Jodd Carter and Daniel Salters led off with back-to-back singles, Carter later scoring on a sac fly to make it 2-1.

In the sixth, Lynchburg loaded the bases with NO OUTS, but Salem's Roniel Raudes battled back and struck out the nex two. Salters then tapped one back to the mound but Raudes can't make the play, run scores.

Jorma Rodriguez then followed with a single to center that drives in two more, 5-1 Hillcats.

Back came the Red Sox with two in the seventh off Bieber, including Jordan Betts' rbi double.

But the Hillcats win 5-4, game two of the series Saturday night at 6 in the Hill City.
