D-Braves defeat Kingsport to stay alive in Appy League playoff chase
DANVILLE, Va. (Danville Braves) - A stellar outing by Odalvi Javier lifted the Danville Braves to a 5-3 win over the Kingsport Mets in Saturday night’s series finale. Raysheandall Michel scored a pair of runs and Kevin Maitan delivered an RBI triple that helped the Braves erase an early 1-0 deficit.
For the third game in a row, Kingsport drew first blood when a double, single, and RBI groundout scored Gavin Garay in the 3rd inning. That would be the only run Javier (4-2) would allow. He set a season high with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing seven hits while striking out four.
Danville (28-28) responded one inning later when Maitan’s triple scored Derian Cruz from first base. In the 5th, a throwing error by Kingsport shortstop Hansel Moreno plated two more runs and gave the Braves a 3-1 lead. That lead would expand to 5-1 in the 7th on RBI singles from Cruz and Jeffrey Ramos.
The Mets managed two runs in the 8th inning off Zach Rice, but Walter Borkovich would strike out the side in the 9th to earn his 2nd save. In addition to going 3-4 tonight, Michel also showed off his arm from right field throwing out Rigoberto Terrazas at third base and narrowly missing a second assist at home plate.
The Braves and Princeton Rays meet for a three game series beginning Sunday. Bruce Zimmermann will get the ball for Danville.
