Wisconsin beats Virginia Tech 84-74 in NCAA Tournament first-round game
BUFFALO, NY - Virginia Tech trailed Wisconsin by just one point with less than two-and-a-half minutes to play, but the Badgers closed the game with a 10-1 run to beat the Hokies 84-74 in NCAA Tournament action Thursday night in Buffalo.
Bronson Koenig buried a school-record eight 3-pointers and scored a game-high 28 points, Nigel Hayes added 16 as the Badgers advance to round two Saturday when they'll face the tourney's number one overall seed and defending champion Villanova.
Zach LeDay led Virginia Tech with 23 points, 17 in the second half, the redshirt senior playing his final game for the Hokies. Ty Outlaw added 16 points and seven rebounds, Justin Robinson 11 points and Seth Allen 10 for the Hokies.
Wisconsin led by four at the half 34-30.
The Badgers made the big plays late, Wisconsin the only team in the country to make the Sweet 16 the last three years.
