Winthrop wins series opener over LU 5-3, UVa edges VT 10-9 in college baseball
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - Winthrop scored four runs in the second to grab an early lead and never trailed in a 5-3 series opening win over the Liberty Flames in Big South Baseball.
Liberty had its four-game win streak come to an end but the Flames hang on to first place in the Big South, now at 7-and-3 in league play.
The Flames' Andrew Kowalo hit his fourth home run, a solo shot in the sixth, that cut Winthrop's lead to 5-3.
But that's as close as Liberty could get. The Flames drop to 20-and-12 overall, Winthrop improves to 6-and-4 in the Big South, 18-and-16 overall.
Winthrop outhit Liberty 11-6, each team committed two errors.
Game two of the series is Friday night, 6 p.m. at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
14th-ranked Virginia and Virginia Tech battled for four hours and 15 minutes in Blacksburg before UVa held on for a 10-9 win.
The Cavaliers led this game 7-1 in the early innings before the Hokies stormed back with four in the 8th to draw within 10-9.
But Virginia held on, game two of the series Friday night at 5:30 in Blacksburg.
Virginia improves to 28-and-8 overall, Virginia Tech drops to 18-and-18 on the season.
