Lord Botetourt beats Hopewell 53-45 for Class 3 girls state championship

RICHMOND, Va. (WSET) - Brooklyn Shelton poured in a game-high 21 points, Miette Veldman added 12 points and 13 rebounds to help power Lord Botetourt to a 53-45 win over Hopewell for the Class 3 girls state championship.

After Botetourt broke out to a 9-2 lead the first quarter, the Blue Devils charged back to grab a 3-point lead early in the second. The Cavaliers led by just one, 19-18, at the half.

Botetourt's lead was only two entering the fourth quarter, but the Cavaliers were able to build a lead of as much as 13 in the final stanza.

Hopewell rallied, but Lord Botetourt shut the door to win its first state title since the program won back-to-back championships in 1995 and '96.

Lord Botetourt outrebounded Hopewell 36-23 for the game.

It's the second state title this school year for many of the Botetourt players, who were also a part of the state champion volleyball team back in November.
