Liberty Flames Baseball upsets #3 North Carolina 5-2
CHAPEL HILL, NC (WSET) - The Liberty Flames knocked off number 3 in the country North Carolina 5-2 Tuesday night in Chapel Hill.
Trailing 2-1 in the 8th, LU scored four two-out runs to grab its first lead of the game.
Liberty third baseman Trey McDyre had the big hit, clearing the bases with a double off the top of the left-center field wall. Jake Barbee then followed with an rbi triple to center to run the lead to 5-2.
Liberty improves to 21-14 on the season and wins in first-year head coach Scott Jackson's return to Chapel Hill. Jackson was an assistant coach at North Carolina the past eight seasons.
The Tar Heels are the highest ranked team Liberty has defeated in program history. Before Tuesday night, the highest-ranked team the Flames had beaten on the diamond was number 5 South Carolina 3-2 in 2013.
Liberty banged out 14 hits, the most by a team against the Tar Heels this season.
North Carolina falls to 29-8.
Liberty collected 14 hits, the most by a team against UNC this season. Meantime, Flames pitchers held Carolina to just four hits for the game.
McDyre led the Flames at the plate with his go-ahead 3-run double in the 8th, he was 2-for-4 on the night with 3 RBIs. D.J. Artis homered and went 3-for-4 , Andrew Kowalo also went 3-for-4 with a run scored while Barbee was 3-for-5 with an RBI triple.
