VES Defends VISAA State Title by Taking Down North Cross
LYNCHBURG - For the second straight season the V.E.S. Bishops are the VISAA Division III champions. They defeated North Cross 28-14 Saturday afternoon.
Ronnie Stringfield, who is getting recruited by Navy, JMU, and ODU, led the rushing attack for V.E.S. He had 29 carries for 150 yards, and three touchdowns.
Quarterback Taylor McHugh was 6-12 passing for 179 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. McHugh's lone touchdown pass was a 66-yarder to Trevon Fields. He finished with two receptions for 107 yards.
The Bishops jumped out to a 22-0 lead in the first half. North Cross adjusted to a more spread attack offensively in the second half enabling them to score twice. A botched V.E.S. punt snap set North Cross up with great field position. Ryan Dent took advantage with a touchdown run to make it 22-7. A Max Revercomb to Penn Draper touchdown pass in the 4th quarter made it 28-14.
The Raiders are coached by Stephen Alexander. He graduated from V.E.S. and was an offensive coordinator for the Bishops for four seasons. He said he has great memories from his days at V.E.S. but as the North Cross head coach he felt as if he was in enemy territory on Saturday.
V.E.S. finishes the season 9-1. North Cross finishes 8-3.
