Northside Wins 3A Title Over James Monroe
LYNCHBURG - Dominic Dunnaville ran for three touchdowns and Northside's defense held James Monroe to just 216 yards of offense in a 24-10 win in the 3A VHSL State Championship Game.
It was the third straight season in which James Monroe (10-5) has lost in the state title game.
Dunnaville was 7 of 12 passing for 71 yards. He was intercepted once. He was most effective rushing the ball in short yardage situations. He ran 17 times for 57 yards, including touchdown runs of 6 yards, 9 yards, and 1 yard.
Northside's defense intercepted James Monroe QB Jay Scroggins three times. Scroggins was 18 of 36 passing for 211 yards. He was sacked by Northside's dominant defensive line six times.
Northside finished the season 14-1, earning its first state title since 2009.
- In five playoff games Dunnaville finished with 6 rushing touchdowns, 8 passing touchdowns, and one interception.
- Before important games, teams mostly watch inspirational movies like Remember the Titans, Rudy, Braveheart, or 300, but on the night before the title game Northside opted to take in Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas. Last week the Vikings did watch Thor but such theatrical motivation was apparently unnecessary for Saturday's championship contest.
