Mike Scharnus resigns as Altavista football head coach
ALTAVISTA, Va. (WSET) - After 11 years on the sidelines at Altavista High School, head coach Mike Scharnus announced on Tuesday that he's stepping aside.
Scharnus led the Colonels to 3 state championships, including going back to back in 2013 and 2014. That 2014 season capped off a 25-game winning streak and a perfect 15-0 season. After joining the Colonels in 2007, Scharnus helped turn Altavista's fortunes around, going from 2-8 his first year, to a state title two years later.
Over his 11 years at Altavista, Scharnus guided the Colonels to 92 wins in 11 seasons, and 3 state titles. Scharnus previously won the 2000 state championship as head coach of Rustburg.
