Heritage beats Staunton River 49-35 to advance to state finals
MONETA, Va. (WSET) - Heritage senior running back Elijah Davis ran for 375 yards and five TDs to power the Pioneers past Staunton River 49-35 in the Class 3 state semifinals Saturday afternoon in Moneta.
The game was an offensive shootout from the start, Davis scored three touchdowns and piled up 241 yards in the opening 14 minutes as Heritage built a 28-12 lead.
But the Golden Eagles charged back, T.J. Tester scored two of his three touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the first half to pull Staunton River within 28-25 at the half. Tester earlier ripped off a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Grayson Overstreet scored two TDs, his second of the game early in the third quarter, a 30-yard run, gave Staunton River its first and only lead of the game 32-28.
Heritage retook the lead on a Jabari Blake to Chris Megginson 43-yard TD.
Staunton River then tied the game with an Adam Johns field goal with just over nine minutes left before Davis sealed the win with two TD runs in the fourth.
Heritage, 13-and-1, will now face Hopewell next Saturday at noon in Williamsburg for the state championship.
