Football Friday's Top 13 Games of the 2014 Season August 29th - Brookville at Gretna Two teams. Two new head coaches. Only one win open the season with a win. Gretna won at Brookville last season 42-20. That ended Brookville's 28-game winning streak. August 29th - Parry McCluer at Rockbridge County Another season opener pits two teams 9.8 miles apart. This one was as close as close can be in 2013. Parry McCluer won 17-16. Football Friday Player of the Year finalist Ryheem Dawson is Parry McCluer's featured back. He returns for his senior season. August 29th - Buckingham Co. at Appomattox Appomattox players grinned when asked about this game. They know it will be a big one. Buckingham won every game in this series from 2009 to 2012 but Appomattox ended the streak last season with a 25-13 win. September 5th - Gretna at Tunstall These teams are in different districts but the same county. Gretna has dominated this series in recent years but Tunstall returns top notch defender Caleb Ashworth. He'll be chasing down Gretna running backs and putting pressure on Gretna's passing game. September 19th - Northside at Salem These two football factories have been overly impressive in recent years. Northside won this game 17-10 last year. Both teams will be breaking in new QBs this season. The winner will most certainly be cashing in big playoff points because the loser will likely have a solid record by season's end. September 26th - Brookville at Jefferson Forest Two teams. Two new coaches. One rivalry. JF coach Bob Christmas gets reacquainted with this rivalry after missing out on it for more than a decade when he was coaching in Georgia. September 26th - LCA at Charlotte Christian Last year's game still has to be fresh in the mind of LCA players and coaches They had the ball, leading with 2:26 to go but did not run the ball. They stayed in attack mode and as a result they had to punt and Bo Hines returned the punt for a touchdown with 1:11 to go. LCA ended up losing 32-31. October 10th - Dan River at Altavista The two best teams in the Dogwood District will meet in mid-October. We wish this game was at the end of the season when even more would be on the line. Both teams have visions of extended playoff runs. Altavista is the defending Division 1 state champions. They beat Dan River 30-0 last season. I think the Wildcats remember that. October 17th - E.C. Glass at Heritage The Hill City rivalry will have a new playing surface. The field turf replaces the grass at City Stadium. Heritage took care of the Hilltoppers last season 42-28 but Glass is expected to have a better season and a win over their rival could provide them with some necessary playoff points down the line. October 17th - G.W. at Magna Vista If this game is anything like last year's it will be well worth the price of admission. Magna Vista beat the Eagles 29-28 last season. It was G.W.'s first loss. G.W. had a 14-point lead in the second half but Shoalin McGuire ran the ball repeatedly and finally punched in the winning score with 30 seconds left. October 24th - Heritage at Liberty Could this decide which team is the best in the Seminole District? Heritage coach Brad Bradley has stated his belief in the Minutemen. Heritage moved to 8-0 with a close 30-27 over Liberty last season. October 31st - Rustburg at Altavista This was one of the best games of the season in 2013. Altavista's Walker Allen kicked a field goal with 15 seconds to go to give the Colonels a 24-21win. That win gained Altavista some big playoff points since Rustburg is a Division 3 team. On the flip side, Altavista is expected to have a great season so if Rustburg can win it would earn them big points. November 7th - Chatham at Appomattox Playoff points. Playoff points. Playoff points. Appomattox won this regular season finale 34-13. They helped put Appomattox in the playoffs and kept Chatham out. The Cavaliers ended up missing the postseason by less than a half a point.
