Top 3 finalists for Football Friday "Player of the Year" award revealed
Congratulations to our 3 finalists for Football Friday's "Player of the Year" award! Here are the finalists, in alphabetical order:
Larry Basham - William Byrd
The Terriers had plenty of bite in 2016, thanks to the offensive firepower of Basham, accumulating 2,454 rushing yard and 45 TD's. Coach Jeff Highfill and the Terriers took out dangerous opponents left and right all season, including Staunton River. In a muddy, sloppy game, Basham ran like he was on astroturf, powering ahead with 44 carries for 267 yards and two TDs, in the Terriers 26-6 win over the Golden Eagles.
Elijah Davis - Heritage
The junior running back had a breakout year for the Pioneers, with 2,726 rushing yards on the season and 41 TD's scores, not to mention the 5 TD passes he threw on the year. Davis truly did it all for Heritage in the playoffs, with his finest performance perhaps coming in the second round against Northside. Sick with the flu, Davis still rushed for 258 yards and four touchdowns, threw a TD pass and ran in a 78-yard kickoff return to send the Pioneers on over Northside.
Grayson Overstreet, Staunton River
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior running back and linebacker has dominated in 2016. In 2016, Overstreet became just the 4th player in VHSL history to score more than 300 points in a season, while setting a new VHSL single-season scoring record (350 points entering the finals). To date, Overstreet has 48 touchdowns and 31 two-point conversions, giving him 326 total points, while putting up 2,804 yards for the Golden Eagles. Combined with his 78 tackles (13 for a loss), Overstreet has dominated on both sides of the ball.
VOTING IS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING!
Tune into this Friday at 11:15pm for the season finale of "Football Friday" to find out who wins!
