Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs hockey opens training camp
ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) - Training camp is underway for the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs hockey team at the Berglund Center.
Now in their second year in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), the Dawgs are looking to improve on their 17-win performance a year ago. Despite not registering a lot of wins, the Dawgs did lead the league in call ups to the next levels of professional hockey, something coach Sam Ftorek says shows that Roanoke is doing things "the right way".
As for the look of the 2017 team, Ftorek says this year's Dawgs should be tougher and more skilled in a variety of areas. "We've got the right mix of size, skill, grit, toughness, finesse, goaltending." says Ftorek. " Of course you say that now, and a month into the season, we'll know what we really have . Size was an issue for us last year, and we've addressed that."
The season opener for the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs is on Friday, October 20th, when Roanoke hosts Fayetteville at the Berglund Center at 7:05pm.
