Liberty High assistant basketball coach Tony McKinney dies
BEDFORD CO., Va. (WSET) - Liberty High School assistant basketball coach Tony McKinney passed away early Friday morning.
McKinney, a 1980 Liberty High School grad, was in his mid-50's. McKinney's stage 4 melanoma cancer returned late this past year. It didn't stop the former Minutemen football player from helping coach the Liberty basketball squad this season with his friend and head coach Randy Dunton.
McKinney preached the fundamentals, was a great motivator and taught the importance of winning with grace and losing with dignity, which is how he fought his battle with cancer. Tony McKinney was loved by his players and fellow coaches.
"You know, as they say, a tree is best measured when it's cut down and you know we lost a redwood today inside of our family and friends and Tony's influence in the community. He was such a giving person and also such a talented person. So he added a lot of value and a lot of direction," Randy Dunton, the head basketball coach said.
