Clint Bowyer wins STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway
MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WSET) - This was not your typical Martinsville. Only four caution flags, just one true yellow. 9-time Martinsville champ Jimmie Johnson never a factor, finishing 15th.
5-time Martinsville champ Denny Hamlin won stage 1, Penske Racing's Ryan Blaney stage 2, he finished third.
But in the end, nobody could catch Clint Bowyer who takes checkers for the first time since October 2012 at Charlotte, his first win at Martinsville.
Clint Bowyer, FIRST WIN SINCE OCT., 2012 AT CHARLOTTE, said "The one thing that was missing was a picture in Victory Lane with my kids. You start to think about that driving up here, you're like 'dang', I've got to get him in Victory Lane because you don't know how many more opportunities you're gonna have."
Kyle Busch settled for second, his fifth top-10 in six races this year.
Kyle Busch, SECOND-PLACE FINISHER (POINTS LEADER), said "We take solace, sure. But ultimately we're here to win each and every week. I know everybody is, but we've been that close every week."
This day belonged to the 14 team, Bowyer and three-year-old son Cash.
Clint Bowyer said "To be able to have us in Victory Lane, have us number one, that was pretty cool, wasn't it."
Pole-sitter Martin Truex wound up fourth, Hamlin 12th. William Byron the top rookie at 20th.
So Clint Bowyer celebrates his first win at Martinsville, ninth CAREER victory. He's taking himself home a grandfather clock! Drivers are off this coming weekend for Easter Sunday.
