PARKLAND, Fla. (WPEC) - Students in Parkland return to school Wednesday morning and for many it is the first time they’ve walked the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School since a gunman opened fire, killing 17 people on Valentine’s Day.

The fence surrounding the high school is covered as far as the eye can see with messages of hope, flowers and candles.

More than 400 law enforcement officers were expected to come out Wednesday to welcome back students and teachers as well as reassure them that they are safe.

Therapy dogs and grief counselors will also be provided in each classroom.

The principal of Stoneman Douglas said no book bags are needed because the focus will solely be on the healing process, not curriculum.

Students will be on a half-day schedule from Wednesday to Friday.

Class starts at 7:40 a.m. and will let out at 11:40 a.m.

Watch students leave class at 11:40 a.m.
