Woman found dead in basement after fire breaks out at Chatham mayor's home
PITTSYLVANIA Co., Va. (WSET) -- One person has died and one was sent to the hospital after a fire at a home in Chatham on Davis Road Thursday around 2 p.m.
Pittsylvania County Public Safety Coordinator Chris Slemp confirmed that woman was found dead in the basement of the home after firefighters extinguished the blaze and were able to enter the home.
According to online records, the home is that of Chatham Mayor Roy Byrd Jr.
Mayor Byrd was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Multiple agencies were onsite all afternoon, including several rescue squads and members of the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office, Chatham Police Department, and Virginia State Police.
Fire departments who responded include Chatham, Blairs, and Gretna.
The woman's body was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke.
Officials said they suspect no foul play in this incident and the fire was contained to the basement of the house.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
