VDGIF: No charges pending after deer gores Giles Co. man
PEARISBURG, Va. (WSET) - Giles County officials say no charges are pending after a man was gored by a deer he and his wife raised.
Officials say the incident happened Monday, March 20 around 4:20 p.m. on Riverbend Drive in Pearisburg.
Officials say Paul "Chappy" Baker was pinned to the ground and gored by a nine-point buck that he and he wife had taken care of for four years.
Baker and his family had been caring for the deer since it was a fawn, and the animal had imprinted on the family.
Baker's wife shot the deer, according to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Officials say the health department was called because of the deer's erratic behavior, which they say could have been rabies.
They say Baker was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and had X-rays.
The VDGIF says if they had known the Bakers were keeping the deer they would have done something, but they don't prosecute retroactively.
