Sheriff's Office: Man charged in fatal Gladys fire commits suicide
AMHERST Co., Va. (WSET) - The Amherst County Sheriff's Office says Martelle Wooding has died after hanging himself in his jail cell.
Wooding hung himself over Saturday morning, according to the Blue Ridge Regional Jail.
Officials say he was pronounced dead Thursday after being removed from life support.
The sheriff's office has ruled his death a suicide.
Wooding was charged with second degree murder in the fire that killed three women in Gladys.
48-year-old Melynda Callaham, her daughter 28-year-old Francheska Lane, and granddaughter 7-year-old Kadriana died in the fire last December on Marysville Road.
Wooding was scheduled to have a hearing in Campbell County General District Court on Monday, May 22.
