Sheriff: Victim scammed after caller claims to be from sheriff's office, demands payment
BOTETOURT Co., Va. (WSET) -- The Botetourt County Sheriff's Office said it's warning of recent fraudulent activity in the county.
They said suspects are using sheriff's office phone numbers and telling victims they are law enforcement personnel.
Lt. Jeff Stritesky said a local resident got a call at work telling them they had missed jury duty and were subject to arrest and required to post bail.
The caller gave the victims specific instructions to report to the jail and remain on the phone while on the way there.
While on the way there, the victim was told to purchase prepaid cards for payment of bail.
The sheriff's office said it would like to remind everyone that they will not call and demand payment over the phone or computer.
If you have any doubt, call your local sheriff or police department.
