Search warrant reveals new details in Pittsylvania County homicide investigation

Police at the scene when the teen was found dead (WSET)

PITTSYLVANIA CO., Va. (WSET) - There are new details about the murder of a teen in Pittsylvania County.

A search warrant shows Demetrius Brown died from a gunshot wound to the head. The 18-year-old was shot once at close range.

The crime happened earlier this month.

According to court documents, Brown had a bag of what appeared to be marijuana in one hand and a cell phone in the other when authorities found him.

Security cameras from Brown's home show a White Cadillac slowly drive past his home and then back up the street. Brown is seen leaving his home with a cell phone.

Investigators were able to unlock the phone and get the number Brown called. They identified that person as a 17-year-old from Pittsylvania County.

The warrant shows that authorities spoke with the mother of the suspect. She told investigators that earlier that evening her son took her car and said he was going out of town to visit family in Florida.

When he used his phone, investigators were able locate him heading south on Interstate 95 in South Carolina. Authorities there located the car and arrested him after a short chase.

The warrant says they found a .40-caliber gun nearby. It's not clear yet if that was the weapon used to kill Brown.

We reached out to local authorities and officials in South Carolina to see when the teen suspect will be brought back to Virginia.

We're still waiting to hear back.
