Sheriff: Man arrested for brandishing gun near Rustburg HS, causing lockdown

Eugene Jefferson Ferguson, III was taken into custody and charged with brandishing a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school and also determined he was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Lynchburg for failing to appear in court (Blue Ridge Regional Jail)

UPDATE: 6 p.m.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office said they got several calls about a man in possession of a gun at the intersection of Red House Road and Bethany Road in Rustburg around 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 15.

When officers got to the scene, just minutes later, they said the suspect was in a wooded area near Rustburg High School.

The sheriff's office said a firearm was also located in close proximity to the suspect.

CAMPBELL Co., Va. (WSET) -- Campbell County Public Schools said Rustburg High School was placed on a modified lockdown as buses were leaving on Thursday, March 15.

The school system said the Campbell County Sheriff's Office was responding to a threat in the area.

A suspect is now in custody, the school said.

The modified lockdown was lifted at the high school around 3:35 p.m. and it has now resumed normal after school activities.

It's not clear what the threat was about or why the suspect was arrested.
