HALIFAX Co., Va. (WSET) -- The Halifax County School district has the results of a survey asking you what you want to see in the next superintendent.

The most important thing officials noticed is the want for the superintendent to live in the district.

Because of the results, that is a requirement now for anyone who applies for the job.

People in the area also prefer that the new leadership has past teaching or administrative experience.

"You have somebody coming in that has a strong educational background and understands how to be an instructor leader," said Michael Lewis, principal at Halifax County High School. "It's also important they they be an advocate for all students and understand that all students can learn."

After 43 years in public education current superintendent Merle Herndon is set to retire.
