Report: Highest percentage of people who love NASCAR come from our area

(Associated Press)

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- NASCAR may have been born in Daytona Beach, Florida, and found its new home in Charlotte, North Carolina, but the location of their fan base might surprise you.

According to Nielsen Scarborough research, the highest percentage of people watching, attending, or listening to a NASCAR race come from right here in the Roanoke-Lynchburg area.

The majority of the NASCAR race teams are located within a 30-mile radius of Charlotte and each May, the national touring series spends two weeks at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Research shows that only 27-percent of adults in the Charlotte area have watched, attended, or listened to a NASCAR race in the past year.

In Roanoke-Lynchburg, it's at 32-percent.

Five out of the top 10 local markets with the highest concentrations of NASCAR fans are a day trip to the track.

NASCAR fans are 65% more likely than members of the general population to be military veterans and 12% more likely than the general population to be active members of the U.S. armed services.

According to Nielsen Sports Sponsorlink, “American” is the top descriptive attribute that both fans and the general population associate with NASCAR out of the 19 attributes tracked.
