Police: Woman shoots convenience store employee, arrested minutes later

ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) -- Roanoke Police are investigating a shooting at a convenience store on Melrose Ave., NW at the Z-Mart.

Police said that officers responded to the store around 12:15 p.m. Thursday where they found a store employee had been shot in the upper body.

They said he was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.

A witness at the scene told police that the suspect was woman and had driven away from the scene in a white, Toyota pickup truck with a specific tag.

Officers at the scene of the shooting relayed the description by radio and the woman in the truck was spotted around 12:17 p.m. on Cove Road.

The suspect was identified as Dawn Michele Whitlock, 43, of Roanoke County.

Whitlock has now been charged with malicious wounding and was taken to Roanoke City Jail.

Police said evidence technicians are continuing to collect evidence from the scene.
