Police search for suspect they say caused crash leading to church fire

SMYTH Co., Va (WSET) -- Virginia State Police were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash in Smyth County around 5:40 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to police, a sedan was traveling northbound when the driver lost control and ran off the left side of the road.

Police say the vehicle caught fire when it struck Pugh Mountain Free Will Baptist Church. The fire then spread to the church building.

Following the crash, police say the driver exited the vehicle and fled the scene.

The suspect is described as a male in his early 30s and 40s, with a tall, slender build and wearing dark clothing.

Police say state police canine units were called to the scene to track the suspect.

The investigation of this incident remains ongoing.
