Police: Officer-involved shooting leaves man dead in Henry Co.
UPDATE (11:00 PM): Neighbors are reacting to an officer-involved shooting that happened in Bassett Tuesday morning.
"I'm just sad that it happened here and the guy's dead," Roger Waldron Senior said.
Waldron Sr. recalled what happened next door to the home he's lived in for 20 years.
"I am really surprised," he said. "Nothing like this has ever happened up here... right here in my own back yard."
Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry said this incident has taken a toll on the department. He said their goal every day is to protect their community.
"We have a lot of people and they take pride in serving the community and it has left a mark," Sheriff Perry said. "We take pride and we never want to hurt anyone."
We also spoke with the people who live on the property where the shooting happened, but they told us they had no comment.
"We would also like to say that our thoughts and prayers are with everyone, the family of the deceased and the officers," Perry said. "And we ask the community as well if they would have their thoughts and prayers for them."
We do know that multiple rounds were fired by the suspect, before he was shot.
"Why he done what he done, I don't know," Waldron Sr. said.
UPDATE (6:00 PM): Sheriff Lane Perry of Henry County got emotional during a press conference Tuesday afternoon. He said the incident has taken a toll on the department and they just want to protect their community.
Two officers have been placed on administrative leave, which the sheriff said is protocol. The officers will remain on leave during the investigation.
"There's certainly a very tragic incident, first off. There's a person that has lost their life, but you had two officers that were there and they need to process and heal in this incident," Sheriff Perry said.
Authorities currently do not know the connection between the suspect and the people inside the home.
The incident is still under investigation by state police.
