Police: Mother facing neglect, drug charges after 4-year-old found wandering outside
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WSET) -- The Newport News Police Department is investigating after they said a child was found wandering around outside without a shirt and shoes.
Police said officers were dispatched to the Key West Inn on Jefferson Avenue in reference to a found child.
When they got there, officers said they met with the person who called 911 who had the child with her.
The child was identified as a four-year-old boy.
While officers were at the motel, a woman, identified as Sara Hooks, 26, of Newport News, went up to officers saying that she was the child's mother.
Police said Hooks told them she was only gone from the room and child for about 10 minutes, but officers said they determined that she was actually gone for excess of 30 minutes.
The child was also seen going back inside the room, getting a pair of shoes, and walking to a nearby Sonic where he encountered the person who called 911.
Hooks was arrested on child neglect charges, and officers took a hypodermic needle from her purse and also found a metal smoking device with suspected cocaine residue.
She was then charged with possession of schedule I or II drugs and unauthorized distribution of drug paraphernalia.
