Police: 29-year-old killed after being ejected from vehicle in crash on Route 24
BEDFORD Co., Va. (WSET) -- Virginia State Police has identified the driver involved in a fatal crash along Route 24 in Bedford County.
Police said Anthony Thomas Rezzonico, 24, of Bedford was driving east on Route 24 near Staunton River High School around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, March 7 when he crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road, and hit a fence and trees.
They said Rezzonico hit several signs before going 15-20 feet down an embankment.
Rezzonico was not wearing his seatbelt and was taken to the hospital by an ambulance.
His passenger, identified as Justin Ryan Holdren, 29, of Bedford was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, crews had to work to remove his body from beneath the vehicle.
"[We] do not know if speed was a factor and do not believe that anything else was a cause. The time of day may have had something to do with it, with the sun being in position," said Jack Arrington, Deputy Chief, Moneta Fire Department on Wednesday.
Police said charges are pending.
The crash remains under investigation.
