Police: 18-year-old charged with 3 felonies after shooting near Danville school

Darick Lamont Richardson, 18, has been charged with discharging a firearm on school property, aid in concealing a stolen firearm, and illegally possessing a firearm on school property.

DANVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- An 18-year-old has been charged with three felonies after the Danville Police Department said he opened fire near a Danville elementary school Wednesday, February 14.

Darick Lamont Richardson, 18, has been charged with discharging a firearm on school property, aid in concealing a stolen firearm, and illegally possessing a firearm on school property.

Police said someone called 911 saying there was man shooting at Johnson Elementary School around 3 p.m.

Investigators said the shooting happened on the perimeter of the school grounds near Northmont Boulevard and Melrose Avenue around a shelter area that's commonly used by the public and was not directed at the school.

Richardson is currently housed at the Danville City jail under no bond pending his first court appearance.

This investigation is continuing.
