Volunteer firefighter killed after being hit by fire truck
UPDATE: 11:30 p.m.
State Police has identified the volunteer firefighter killed Friday after responding to an accident in Eagle Rock.
Police said Roger D. Johns, 63, of Eagle Rock died after being hit by a vehicle after he responded to the scene of a single vehicle crash on Route 220 in Botetourt County.
The Eagle Rock Fire Department responded to the crash at the intersection of Route 220 and Catawba Creek Rd.
Police said a fire department member was backing up a fire department vehicle to block the road when the vehicle hit Johns who was serving as a ground guide.
State Police said Johns died at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
The driver of the fire truck was not injured.
State Police said charges are pending.
UPDATE: 11 p.m.
Botetourt County officials said the volunteer firefighter has passed away.
"At this time, our focus is on the welfare of his family and the Botetourt County firefighter community, and we therefore are not providing any further details at this time," wrote Cody Sexton, Management Assistant of the Botetourt County Administrator's Office.
BOTETOURT Co., Va. (WSET) -- Botetourt County officials said a volunteer firefighter was injured at the scene of an accident on Friday.
An emergency call was received to respond to an incident in the northern part of the county.
