PITTSYLVANIA Co., Va. (WSET) - The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office said a juvenile was arrested in connection to an alleged sexual assault and battery incident at a high school football game.

Investigators said the incident happened during a football game at Tunstall High School on Friday, September 15.

They were playing against Chatham.

We're told by authorities that the alleged offender is a boy and the victim is a girl.

Police said both are under the age of 18 so their names will not be released.

They said the two are students, but they won't say where they attend school.

Oakes Griffith and his wife Noreen have two granddaughters who go to Tunstall.

"We were shocked to hear about it," Oakes Griffith said.

They said it's unusual for this type of incident to happen in this community. "I've never heard of anything like that happening," he said.

They've been attending football games for the last 30 years and were at the game last Friday.

"I had heard and thought there was a little fight or some kind of scuffle then the next day, it was the next day before we actually even heard anything," Griffith said.

Pittsylvania County Schools superintendent, Mark Jones says everyone's safety is his number one priority.

"It's just very unfortunate that this has taken place," Jones said.

Jones said they had enough staff at the game and at least three or four deputies for security.

"We are identifying any areas that may be dark spaces and we're making sure that we either have those fenced off or that we have supervison in those areas," Jones said.

For Tunstall's home game this upcoming Friday, temporary fencing will be up in those dark spaces until they can get something more permanent.

Captain Corey Webb with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office said parents should not be worried

"There's no need for parents or the general public to be in any fear or concerns that this may happen again," Webb said.

The alleged offender is in the W.W. Moore Detention Facility and will remain there until further notice.

The county is working on setting a court date for him soon.
