Officials: 1-year-old dies after being found face down in hot bathtub
MATHEWS Co., Va. (WSET) - The Mathews County Sheriff's Office says a 1-year-old died Thursday after being found unresponsive in a bathtub.
The sheriff's office says they got a call from the Gloucester County Emergency Communication Center advising a rescue crew was on the way to the home in the 11100 block of John Clayton Memorial Highway.
They say the initial 911 came in at 12:20 p.m.
According to a news release from the sheriff's office, the child had been scalded in the bathtub and was taken to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.
The victim's mother told deputies the child had been left alone in the tub, and when she came back in the room, the hot water was running, and the child was face down in the water.
The sheriff's office says the child was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The body was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond for autopsy.
The Mathews County Sheriff's Office and Mathews County Social Services are investigating the incident.
