MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- A flash flood Monday afternoon caused one section of the Joseph Martin Highway in Martinsville to flood leading to a road closure. It also resulted in what officials said is more than likely a road washout.

One person even got stuck in the mud trying to go around the road signs.

A Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) official said the washout is likely due to a culvert pipe.

She said the large amount of rainfall along with debris likely caused the pipe to get blocked.

That part of the highway will be closed until further notice.

Henry County has been hit especially hard by floods and the Director of Public Safety Matt Tatum is asking for patience.

"We know that we've had an emergency in our community. We're trying to get out to everybody as quickly as we can. Please be patient with us," Tatum said.

VDOT officials say if you see any downed trees or road washouts, call 1-800-FOR-ROAD.
