Henry County's request to construct a trailhead facility for the extension of the Dick and Willie Trail was not granted by the Martinsville City Council Tuesday night.

The County is looking to extend the trail from Spruce Street to Smith River Sports Complex, but has met opposition.

Martinsville Mayor Gene Teague said many people who live in the vicinity of where the trail would be lengthened believe it is too close to their homes.

Teague said those individuals feel the trail is infringing on their privacy.

The County tried to negotiate by acquiring land that would shift the trail farther from the original planned location.

Teague said by not approving the trailhead facility, the County can still build the trail and not move it farther away from the houses.

"The extra 100 yards, if that were my property and I knew the trail was going to go in anyway, I would want the extra on average 100 yards the trail to be moved away from my property, so I think we're missing an opportunity to get that move," Teague said.

In response to the community backlash, the council motioned to write a letter to the Harvest Foundation to stop investing in the trail.
