Man arrested and charged for eluding police during traffic stop
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- A Madison Heights man has been arrested after police say he eluded a state trooper who was attempting to pull him over.
Police say a State Trooper initiated a traffic stop on an SUV for speeding on Clark Road in Campbell County early Sunday morning. Police say the SUV refused to stop, sped away from the trooper, and a pursuit was initiated around 1 a.m.
The SUV continued through the Evington area and eventually ended up on Route 460, according to police. They say as the SUV made a right turn from Route 460 onto Turkey Foot Road in Campbell County, the trooper maneuvered his vehicle to make contact with the SUV to bring it to a stop and end the pursuit.
However, police say the maneuver caused the SUV to run off the side of Route 460 and hit an embankment. The driver then fled on foot.
Police say the SUV’s driver, Dwayne J. Gibson Jr., 29, of Madison Heights was arrested a short time later.
The trooper's patrol vehicle also struck the embankment. He was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital, where he was treated and released for minor injuries.
Gibson was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash and released Sunday morning.
Police say Gibson was wanted on prior outstanding warrants. He was also charged with one felony count of eluding police, reckless driving and for driving on a suspended license.
