'Lynchburg Stars' sets new record, raises more than $60,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Lynchburg's local celebrities showed their best moves for a great cause at Saturday night's "Dancing with the Lynchburg Stars".
The sold-out event set a new record, raising over $60,000 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia program.
According to Dawn Blankship of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the amount raised was $30,000 more than last year.
The competition included "Dancing with the Stars" champion and Forest native, Rashad Jennings as a judge.
The theme, "A Night at the Movies", featured dance routines to songs from popular movies.
Will Stafford and Caren Pinto of ABC 13 danced the night away to "369" from the popular dance film franchise, "Step Up".
Danner Evans and her partner Norwood Morrison performed a hip-hop routine to "Star Wars".
Jennings also took the floor to show the audience that he could still move.
The event raised funds through ticket sales, votes and donations.
Will Stafford and Caren Pinto came in second place for bringing in 869 votes, which raised $8,690.
Michael Elliott, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Centra Health and his partner Terri Lane brought in the most votes, raising $11,670.
Garry Viar, owner of Salon V in Lynchburg and his partner Samantha Turner took home the winning trophy for their routine to "Rock this Town" by the Stray Cats.
Organizers shared that because of the great succes of the event, they will have to find a larger venue next year.
