Liberty High School "adopts" school in Texas ravaged by Hurricane Harvey

BEDFORD, CO. (WSET) -- One local school is making an impact on a national scale. Hurricane Harvey ravaged Ingleside High School in Texas.

Now, Liberty High School in Bedford County decided to "adopt" the school.

"Schools seem to be the center of what is functioning in a community, it just broke my heart," said Principal of Liberty High School, Kathleen Dills.

Nathan Dowdy is a senior at Liberty High School, "What if it was here, what if it was my high school, and my friends who couldn't play sports anymore," said Dowdy.

Dowdy said while they are giving back, they feel they get something in return.

"It gives a sense of pride to ourselves, knowing that we just did something and helps us unify as a high school and a community together," explained Dowdy.

The school has different types of fundraisers all year long for their new friends.

They are having homeroom competitions to collect money and send cards.

"I hope that they learn that they can impact lives beyond the Bedford county lines," said Dills.

Ingelside High School is expected to open up at the end of September.

"We want to get them back to where they were, but in a better place than the first time," said Emiy Neel, a 10th grader at Liberty High School, "I want to make sure that everyone is taken care of, knows that they are not alone, and that things will get better."

Minutemen helping Mustangs, "When we say hashtag minutemen love mustangs that will be what we are living everyday through homeroom, through lessons that we do, through the donations that we get, through the money it can happen," said Dills.

"We are such a big family here, we care about each other so much," said Dowdy.

Valley View Mall in Roanoke and Liberty Landscaping in Bedford will be the drop off sites for any donations. Both organizations will be collecting new clothing and new shoes beginning Friday, September 8 through Wednesday, September 20. Beginning Friday, September 8 through Wednesday, September 20 Liberty High School will begin raising much needed funds to send to the school.

Cash and check donations will be accepted through October 15, 2017.
