Investigators: Man shot woman twice, took off in vehicle with other people

CAMPBELL Co., Va. (WSET) -- The Campbell County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man they said shot a woman twice.

Deputies responded to the 3000 block of Eastbrook Rd. in Lynchburg around 4:22 a.m. on Tuesday.

The female victim said she was riding in a vehicle with three other people in the area when she and the suspect exited the vehicle.

She told deputies that the suspect then shot her in the upper body with a small caliber handgun before the suspect and passengers took off in the vehicle they were riding in.

Investigators said the woman was able to make contact with someone living nearby, who called 911.

The sheriff's office then arrested Curtis Jerel Hayden, 26, of Huddleston and charged him with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The woman was taken to Lynchburg General and is still in the hospital in stable condition.

The sheriff's office said it was assisted by the Roanoke City Police Dept., who arrested Hayden Thursday morning without incident.
