AMHERST Co., Va. (WSET) -- Sweet Briar College welcomed a famous NASA engineer who was featured in the book "Hidden Figures" to its campus on Thursday.

Christine Darden is one of several black women mathematicians who helped win the space race for America.

The movie "Hidden Figures" was made recently after the book.

While Darden wasn't featured in the movie, she was there during that time and spent 40 years with NASA.

She gave some advice for young women, particularly those in engineering and math fields.

"In the movie 'Hidden Figures,' one of the characters says you need to learn as much as you can and be valuable to somebody, and I think that helps, if someone values the work you do that can have a big impact," said Darden.

Darden added that women need to learn to speak up for themselves and ignore negativity.
