Elderly Golden Corral customer hopes to replace dentures after rare incident
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Dentures are necessary for many people to eat and survive, but they come with a hefty price tag. What started out as a family dinner at Golden Corral in Lynchburg ended under unfortunate circumstances for Gladys resident, James Adams, 76.
"I ate a plate of food and was getting ready to get up and get the next one and then all of a sudden I got sick," he said.
Then up came the food, and unbeknownst to him at the time, his dentures. He said the server immediately cleaned the table before he realized they were missing. "I walked up and told the manager, and he said, 'Oh, we got a trash compactor,' and he said 'There's no telling where it is now," said Adams.
His friend Shirley Bradley called the floor manager who referred her to their insurance company.
"She said to me, 'I ain't giving you nothing, and Golden Corral ain't giving you nothing,' and she hung up the phone," said Bradley.
Dentures run anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars, which is a hard pill to swallow on Adams' fixed income. "The damage was done on that property, and we thought that's what the insurance was for," Bradley said.
Golden Corral management at the Lynchburg location said they searched for more than an hour for the dentures. Bradley said she and Adams were told otherwise.
With no way for him to chew his food, they're hoping Golden Corral will answer his call for help.
"I would like for someone to give me some more teeth or help me to get a new set of dentures," said Adams.
Franchise owner Platinum Corral later issued the following statement to ABC 13:
"We would love to work with his family to establish a GoFundMe page so that Golden Corral can contribute up to $1,000 and rally the community to cover any remaining costs to replace Mr. Adams dentures. It would be our pleasure to treat him to dinner when he's feeling better."
