DANVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- Sunday's storm hit Danville so hard that it is now under a local state of emergency.

Part of Westover Drive will remain closed overnight Sunday after several downed trees took out power lines.

Several of those lines could be seen dangling in the air.

Many homes along that road are without power.

Crews were sawing trees and trying to clear debris from the roadway.

The storm left some in the area shaken.

"It was really scary, but I had to hold my composure for my kids. They were a little scared because they have never seen anything like this before," said Ashley Milam, who lives on Westover Drive.

Milam's home luckily was not damaged.

Another resident came out of the movie theater to the horrifying storm.

"You could just see the white and it spinning and I honestly don't ever want to see it again," said Amber Martin.

Officials are estimating that 3,000-4,000 people are without power in the area.

If you need shelter, call the City of Danville non-emergency line at 434-799-5111.
